Audiology and Speech Disorder Center, Birzeit University, West Bank
Palestinian society lacks sufficient trained speech pathologists and audiologists to support existing hearing and speech rehabilitation centers. By establishing an advanced hearing and speech facility at Birzeit University, UPA hopes to help open up a new world to children and adults who have struggled to engage comfortably with their friends and communities.
This project will establish an audiology and speech laboratory for students to obtain a bachelor’s degree in communication disorders and clinical training. This degree will be the first of its kind in Palestine, providing hands-on training and producing specialists in order to meet the large number of Palestinians with communication and hearing disorders.
The laboratory will include computerized audio and clinical equipment for providing quality diagnostic, testing and rehabilitation services to the disabled. The center will also have the potential to conduct research in early identification and intervention methods.
When completed, the center will treat 600 patients with hearing and communication disabilities and train 60 audiology professionals each year.
