Emergency Campaign for Gaza
Winter 2013-2014

On December 10, 2013, International Human Rights Day, UPA issued an Emergency Campaign for Gaza.

In light of the deteriorating health situation in the Gaza Strip, critical pharmaceutical supplies worth $7.1 million have been shipped to warehouses in Amman.  UPA has made secure arrangements that they be trucked by land to a Jordanian Field Hospital in Gaza City.  This hospital was established as an emergency measure after Operation Cast Lead in 2009.  It provides critical sub-specialties that are not otherwise available in Gaza.

One day later, on December 11, 2013, the region was hit by the strongest winter storm in recent decades.  Its strong winds, heavy rains and low temperatures exacerbated an already dire humanitarian situation.  In the Gaza Strip alone, some 40,000 persons have been displaced from their homes due to flooding.

Over the following days, Gaza experienced thousands of damaged homes, overflowing water and sewage systems, extensive power outages, and injuries from storm related accidents.  Due to unsanitary conditions, extreme cold and lack of ambulance access, it is expected that medical needs, especially among the chronically ill, will increase.

In response to the aftermath of the winter storm, UPA issued a second appeal on December 16, 2013.  UPA partner agencies have requested funds to purchase locally blankets and waterproof tarps so as to support neighborhood economies.

UPA will continue to monitor the humanitarian situation closely, obtain first hand updates from our Palestinian partner agencies on the ground and disseminate them to you in a timely manner.

Tax-deductible, end of the year donations to UPA allow for immediate, effective and ongoing responses such as this one.  Thank you for your consideration and generosity.
